Fasting And Vegetarianism

FASTING AND VEGETARIANISM

Two situations in which adequate daily intake of all essential  nutrients may not be achieved if care is not taken to ensure the maintenance of good health.

FASTING
  • Some persons  only consuming pure water during a FAST, while others to have fruit and VEGETABLES JUICES.
  • Many nutrients may not be as efficiently absorbed without the presence of  solid food.
  • When FASTING taking nutrient supplements should be considered.

VEGETARIANISM

  • The practice of eating a meatless diet.
  • Types of VEGETARIANS :
  1. Ovo-lacto - include some animal products such as eggs, milk, and cheese in their diets, but exclude all flesh foods, whether meat, poultry, or fish .
  2. Pure or Strict - refuse from the use of all foods of animal origin.
  3. Lacto - drink milk, eat cheese and other dairy products, but do not eat eggs.
  4. Vegans - eat no meat or other animal-related foods.

  • The main concern in a VEGETARIAN diet :
  1. The sufficient intake of protein. This can be achieved by the combination of  non flesh foods that are low in certain amino acids with other foods that have high concentrations of the same amino acids. Anyone considering adopting a VEGETARIAN diet must understand fully the system of combining "complementary proteins" which will be explained further when discussing on protein. amino acid contents of foods are listed in "Essential Amino Acid Contain of Same Foods".
  2. The lack of vitamin B12 which is found only in animal products. The bad result of this include megaloblastic anemia and perhaps degeneration of the spinal cord.
  3. VEGETARIAN diets contain little vitamin D.
  4. The declining trace mineral content of edible plants result from soil  exhaustion and over use of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Important is zinc, which can be bound in the digestive system, along with other minerals, by foods that are rich in phytates (beans, legumes and grains). This can become a problem if large quantities of these foods are consumed.
  5. The  addition of yeast to grains in bread destroys the phytates by fermentation. Sprouting also neutralizes the phytates.
  • No one should attempt to vary from a standard diet for an extended period of time without first consulting a physician knowledgeable in the field of nutrition and without studying the available literature on the subject.
